Clonea Strand Beach A European Blue Flag Beach Clonea Strand is the premier beach along nearly 100 miles of Ireland's south coast. The beach runs for a full two miles and is swept clean daily by high tide. On a fine summer's day, it's a tremendous playground with lifeguard service. Clonea Strand Hotel overlooks the centre of the beach and is the only hotel along this strand. European Blue Flag Beaches must have "excellent bathing water quality", the beach "must be clean" and "an adequate number of lifeguards and/or lifesaving equipment must be available at the beach." There are many other requirements (for details, click the Blue Flag website). In short, these are best of the best bathing beaches in Europe. Even in winter, Clonea Strand is an inviting walk. You'll find plenty of walkers out enjoying the vast sandy expanse.
